Dan Nuttall – Artist Biography
Dan was born and raised in North Vancouver, British Columbia, where his first job was working as a Biological Interpreter at the Vancouver Public Aquarium. His early education in the biological sciences, particularly marine biology, set into motion a lifelong passion for wild spaces and the creatures that dwell within them.
Moving to Ontario in 1989 to pursue additional education, Dan continued to build on his background in the natural sciences, his academic and professional life focusing on human and non-human animals and issues of space, ecology, design and sustainability. An emerging outsider artist Dan’s artwork stems from his experiences in both the arts and sciences, ranging from the study of animal form and animal perspective to ecological art, explorations of otherness, and the meaning of landscape. Recent paintings have used form from abandoned animal exhibits found in zoos to create“natural” landscapes. Dan works primarily in acrylic on canvas and board but enjoy bringing into being via sculpture, mixed media, installations and oil pastels.
